TV Interview: Spotlight on Cocooning Catharsis

PBCJamaica "Spotlight" TV Interview Originally aired January 2014
for the solo photo-Based exhibition Cocooning Catharis at HiQo Gallery, Kingston, Jamaica
(Dec 19 - Jan 13th, 2014)

This was thankfully a casual but in depth discussion on the inspiration behind the work, and some of the methods used to make the pieces.  It was a great hang with the crew too.

SeBiArt News: from the Bat Cave :)

Bursting at the seams so straight to it!

1)
A few weeks ago I was one of 4 artists* accepted by jury into the Annual Mutual Gallery SuperPlus Under 40 Artist of the Year competition in Kingston, Jamaica.

I'm working in an entirely new image making process for a project titled:

ReKON: differenzierte Möglichkeit (trans. Reconstruction: Differentiated Possibility)
It is most arduous, frightening, and fullfilling process on a daily basis - and I'm quite certain the finish will be an unexpected aesthetic to us all.   Such intensity requires I be quiet and staunchly disciplined to get through it...hence "Bat Cave".

here's a sneaky peek from the inside:

2)

Three images I shot earlier this year in downtown Kingston (Trench Town, Tivoli, and the Waterfront) were accepted for the annual JCDC/National Gallery of Jamaica competition.  I received the bronze prize for Waterfront Divers on Kingston's Edge this past Sunday.  Yayyyyyy!  This work will be up through August at the National Gallery of Jamaica - if you're on the island check us all out.

3)
In the last couple of weeks I was informed that my portrait work series Neue Rootz was selected as 2nd place winner in CCNY's 2012 National Annual Juried Photography Competition!!  I can hardly believe what I am typing - I'm still soaked in shock.   The jurors were Elisabeth Biondi - who over the last 20 years worked at The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Stern, and APERTURE as the Visuals Editor, Director of Photography, and contributor respectively, and in other distinguished roles in publishing and academia. And the other juror, Martine Fougeron - is an accomplished fine art and editorial photographer/contributor to the New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, and New York Magazine.  I'm completely elated to have them view my work - let alone select me for 2nd place.

Quote from the email notice:

"We are happy to say the jurors, after many hours of carefully considering each entry, felt that your submission was particularly strong, and that you have been chosen as the second-place winner of this year’s competition. Congratulations on behalf of the entire CCNY board and staff!"

 OMG!!!

The winning spots are 1st, 2nd, and tie for 3rd place plus 12 honorable mentions.  Congrats to all the artists, who I'm sure are as excited as I am.

See official announcement on the CCNY website.

4)
I submitted work to the Vanderbilt Republic (whom I showed with last year at 25CPW Gallery) and made it through the curatorial and voting phases - yayyy - so I will show with them again this month in AFTH 2012 (Art From The Heart)show at their new Gowanus Loft Location in Brooklyn, New York.

These folks are the most playful and sweetest group of seriously solid quality artists around - because the founder of VR, George del Barrio sets the energy that way.  Light light light!

http://vanderbiltrepublic.com/

5)
Last but so not least - I just got back from Costa Rica. I went down to breathe sweet life into a new multidisciplinary project collaboration with local friend actor/artist Olger Ignacio Gonzalez and NYC friend/dancer/teacher/choreographer Roger C. Jeffrey.  It's a baby of a project now, but this was such a beautiful and INTENSE creative trip that it will have its own post later in the year after further development.  But for now - think dance/film/photography/social-art project.  Yummy-liciousness.

Roger snappin' lights of inspiration - hahaha :)

Lft to Rt: Roger, Margarette, me, Olger. As you see we got to hang with my mama too!

Roger and Olger: Plaza de la Democracia

More photos + show dates and gallery locations coming up in another post soon.

This year keeps slapping me and hugging me at the same time people! Happy Summer to you all - hope to see you at a couple shows - and live-life-live-life-live-life and lift someone in a hug too while you're at it!

*Other 3 artist in Mutual Gallery show in November:
Olivia McGilchrist, Leasho Johnson, and Marvin Bartley

Appeals for the Life of a Friend

Dear friends and family,

This is a very sober and unfortunate reason for an appeal for help.  But hope is strong.

An old friend of mine Neesha Cameron (from my Sandals days in Jamaica) was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer last fall.  Unfortunately she has taken a turn for the worst in the last days and her family, friends, acquaintances and
beyond are pulling together resources in every way possible to raise funds for her treatment.

I know a lot of emails like this float around - often about people we don't know
but I am personally asking you to assist any way you can for someone I do know.

She is a warm and beautiful person with a young daughter who needs her to beat this thing.
And seriously - no amount is too small and you can donate anonymously.  Anything you can give will help - it adds up!

She has been flown Mexico to receive specialized treatment from a highly reputed
practitioner of holistic care for cancer treatment, Dr. Castillo at his clinic in Tijuana*

Contact Info for more info on how to help:

The Cameron family - and primarily Neesha's sisters Orianna and Nekoda can be reached at the

We are also brainstorming a fundraising fashion event to raise funds for 2nd and 3rd treatment sessions for Neesha
later in the summer.

News to follow...

I have also attached a PDF doc with more extensive information about the clinic in
Mexico, the costs of treatment and accommodation with applicable links to treatment info, testimonials from past patients, and also more contact info for the Cameron Family.**

2)
You can send a donation via Paypal to her sisters using this merchant account email address: empressnekoda@yahoo.com

3)
Ladies you can purchase mascara from the MaryKay Foundation where 50% of proceeds
will go to the Neesha Cameron Fund (see/click flyer attached)

Remember any amount will help.

If you cannot donate at this time, you can emit positive wishes for this goal to be met by sharing this with others.

PLEASE  send this out to anyone you know who can assist in any way.
Blog it, Facebook it, Tweet it, Digg it - however you share information widely.

We can't take for granted that no one will respond.  If everyone gets one person to donate - that's HUGE.

She is in severe pain.
This is URGENT
It can't be said any other way...

Deep thanks to you and endless gratitude for however you can help.

Love • Light • Gratitude • Life

Never-ending Search for Sweet Spots

May seem like a random thought ...well I guess it is, but I wanted to save it here with a couple of feel-good videos for future reference:

Be confident in what you want
   so you clearly demand it
But remain humble and innocent in the asking
so you can graciously receive it.

The (Humbling) Humour of Loss, Growth, and Change

Oh how long life is and what a gift it is to have witnesses...life long witnesses, who may not be close to you by any active means, but have seen you either at pivotal shifts on the journey or a few steps in the sub-lifetime of those shifts. These most important beings help to keep WHOLE the picture of your life, the image of yourself, your journey, your growth. They join the dots. They know you in ways your closest friends over shorter and especially recent periods cannot as they are not mired as you are, by the a litany of current distracting details.

--

It was a beautiful Ash Wednesday beach day specifically for the purpose of rejuvenation and support of our dear friend Sean who had recently lost his baby brother Joseph.  After our day out, we settled by the poolside of Jason's mother's home in Kingston.  There we spoke in deep wonder and acceptance of the journey of loss and rebirth that we all have and must endure.  At the close of this, Jason's mum was rushing about, late for her game of tennis, and her sparring partner who came to fetch her was already parked outside:

Friend JH: Berette, do you know who that is in the car outside?
Me: No, who is it?
JH: It's Sister Mary Catherine
Me: What?! No way. From Immaculate??? Lemme see!

I ran outside around to the driver's side of the car where a middle aged woman was seated. Same childlike face that I remember from so many years ago. Except in the place of the Franciscan nun's habit was a tennis headband, bob-length hair flowing free:

Me: Sister Mary Catherine!! Is that really you?!
SMC: Ah...yes...(?)
Me: It's Berette...
Me/SMC: Berette Macaulay (?!)
Me: Yes Yes! Oh my gosh I can't believe it - how long has it been?!
SMC: I know, oh my goodness! I can't believe it. How are you? Where have you been?!
Me: I'm fine! I've been living in the States the past few years. I'm an artist - well currently a photographer...
SMC: How wonderful!! You...you look...well...(!)
Me: Yes, I am.
SMC: I see your mother on television sometimes, and whenever I do, I wonder "what ever became of Berette". And I see you are fine...(as she gazes at me)
Me: Yes, yes I am (smiles, gasps, giggles)
SMC: I'm so glad, because you were such a troubled child. (eyebrows earnestly furrowed, coupled with a smile of disbelieving.)
Me: (laughs in agreement) yes, I was, but alas I've grown to be quite conservative in my old age (laughs more)
SMC: I can see, yes, I'm glad to see you are alright, and healthy, and well.  I didn't know you knew these guys! (referring to our mutual friends)
Me: Yes, a long time too, in fact I met Jason when I was a young child in Sierra Leone, before my 'troubled' teen years! Yeah - the world is small isn't it?!

His mother comes out to get into the car:

SMC: Berette very good to see you.  Take care of yourself.
Me:  So very good to see you too Sister Mary Catherine (I say this
wondering if I should call her this - as she left the nunnery years prior).  Oh wait! Please, before you go, please can we take a picture together, I must have this for posterity.
SMC:  Of course!

Darling Sean, whose shock and loss was just a week old - was standing by looking on.  We had all been in the deep conversational search; reckoning with the mystery of life...the whole reason for this day of togetherness in the sun.  He immediately grasped the seemingly random continuity of this moment and runs around happily to oblige:

by Sean John

As they drove off - we (Sean, Nicky, Jason, and me) all laughed and reeled from this mysterious journey called 'Life', and the never-ending opportunity to complete the circles that help us make sense of it all.

Lessons learned and reinforced:

This life is long, and this life is funny, even while it hurts. Stay awake. Keep joining the dots. Keep searching and creating connections.  Keep loving actively. Go on.

We all piled into our car, and drove off all singing along with this song:

Lovely Day by Bill Withers

Jamrock Talk, Jamrock Walk

Got a few posts building up in me and while I'm getting all caught up in drafting them... the weeks are going by.  So forgive the slight incongruity here - but I need to quickly put up a couple of thoughts and 'shares'.

As some of you know for the past few years - and stemming out of my public school teaching experience with ALATetc and Art for Progress -  I've been working in a volunteer capacity to create educational art workshops/community projects with a couple of organizations; namely CITYarts, Studio 174, and INSCAPE Foundation.  It's all been a bit slow, but the relationships built have been steady and consistently inspiring.  My 'fave orgs' you see listed always in the sidebar is a record of my alliances thus far, and new to the list is Save Our Jamaica - founded by a most passionate soul and loyal Jamrocker - Raxann Chin.

foto by SeBiArt
Raxann and I have partnered in deep conversation and intention to merge our efforts where ever needed to compliment/assist groups we are individually affiliated with.  The promise and potential of this is invigorating and inspiring to say the least.  With SOJ, Raxann is passionately trying to create a stable financial platform of support for established and new community building organizations on the island of Jamaica.

foto from SOJ website

Please visit her website here: Save Our Jamaica
Check and LIKE the SOJ Facebook page.
Please spread the word - and volunteer what you can in this movement, whether it be contact resources, donations - financial or goods, consultation services, field work in workshops, PR, or any other talent or tangible gesture you can offer!

There is great potential here for true collaboration with visual and performing artists, writers, educators, entrepreneurs, tech specialists, etc, and a host of community advocates in all fields to build up a nation of unspeakable talent, potential, and spirit.

---
The next item - just to get this up - is: with the tsunami of protests racing around the globe, it was a matter of time before it hit the US shores.  The Occupy Wall Street protest (sparked originally by Adbusters back in July [great magazine btw!]) is strong, expanding exponentially, and inspiring.  It makes me think of a rant I put up last year (the e-Con Highway) during the midterm elections about the economic disparities in the world, and the vulgar division of wealth and poverty that glows blindingly on a daily basis - and created a good chunk of the messes we're all swimming in now.  Naturally it makes me think of my countries Jamaica, and Sierra Leone - both of which (but SL even more so), are near breathlessly struggling to stay at the surface of this tank, let alone above it!  So I had to share a post from a fellow blogger, which was written specifically from a Jamaican point of view about the London riots.

SeBiArt News: Running on Joy

It would simply be a shame to let too much time pass without sharing this news guys.  Last week was full of fortune and surprises that all occurred rather closely together.
Last Sunday I found out that my work (shown below) was awarded at the JCDC/National Gallery of Jamaica Competition and exhibition with a Bronze medal for Visual Arts and the sectional trophy and cash award for Adult Photography.  Wow.  That's the 2nd year that's happened.  And here I was feeling all itchy about having not produced enough new work in the last months, fretting that my incubation period would adversely affect the reception of my work.  The Universe really reinforced my dreams and vigor to keep going.

Coronation Market Lady                                                                                               2011 JCDC/Nat'l Gallery JA Award Winner

Then 2 days later, (and actually a few minutes after I had shared the former news on Facebook) I got a random, really random email from the CEO of MyArtSpace, Catherine McCormick-Skiba (a site that I have a membership page on but, embarrassingly, I rarely use due to overwhelm) congratulating me on being featured on their front page media windows!!!  As in the front page of their website!  A site that according to some articles out there gets more hits than Saatchi Gallery!  Hello!  What?  I totally freaked.  Who knew anyone was watching? Especially a sloth-like network member like me?  And it was for my (not-so) new series, still in progress, BRANDED, that I'd just uploaded over the weekend*.  Please visit and check it out!  I could never pay for such exposure - really.  Of course I took a screen capture of it to share here - see below.
*view images samples of the project, featuring music mix by Sawandi.

I wrote her back after two days (it took me a minute to digest this stuff) and thanked her quite enthusiastically; I did not make any effort to hide my shock and befuddlement - trust me.  Haha.  And she wrote back the most complimentary and encouraging email about how she felt about my work - with adjectives like "emotionally impactful" and "poignant". I still CANNOT believe it.  So - the dare is on people...Mind the Gap...EVEN more. Hahaha! You know - in this life, you really NEVER know who's watching.  Funny thing is, I kinda put that project to bed, or on a long pause shall we say, but now I aim to finish this thing and get it submitted, once and for all dammit.  Special shout out to Sean John (Spur Tree Lounge, NYC) for pushing me to finish this.  Love ya buddy! And, and - while I'm there - congrats to him for the recent feature on his restaurant in Maxim Magazine - #2 in top 5 dinner line up in America!  AND to my god brother, Akindele Hickling (who my father named by the way - heehee) for his JCDC visual arts awarded paintings as well. He's SUCH an amazing talent as you can see below for yourself.  YeehAW!
The Trials of Elegba by Akindele Hickling

Okay so lots of glee here, but I have to reveal something, and I'm sure some of you will concur, that the reality of life as an artist is indeed cathartic, exciting, and purifying, but, it's utterly terrifying sometimes.  Especially when it comes to sharing this kind of news, or appealing for support. Overcoming fear to create work is somehow easier than writing this blog post right now...which is why I'm forcing myself to do it. It is important for me to share with you, that of all the little adventures I gleefully, and sometimes (maybe most times) naively charge into - this is always the biggest dare of all.  So thank you for hugging me along the way - you'll never know how encouraging it is, how much it means to me.

~

Sooooo...(eye dab, sniffle), on that note; here I go leaping across the gap again to plead for your support on a couple other ventures.

I have 4 photos in a shoot out contest called "Beginnings" on the JPG website. Eeek!  No awards there, but a cash prize is up for grabs, and I need to hear chi-CHING soon! Please check it out if you have a spare minute. I've linked each entry below.  Just click the photos to Visit, View, and Vote:

Secondly, the JCDC/National Gallery Visual Arts Competition has a Viewers Vote section - which I'm now in the running for (like last year some of you might recall...). It would be awesome (and financially useful) to win this - hello - funding to continue my work!!! This is for those of you in Jamaica specifically, as it involves text voting with local cell phone providers. I will be blogging the details on how to vote in my next post. Stay tuned!

In the meantime - make sure to visit the National Gallery and check out the show - it's going on now until Aug 20th! Lemme know how it is since I can't be there.  :(   :)
Have a SUPER productive, creative, and fun week people!!

Nature Nurtures; with a Ku

Watering the muse

Haiku by Mystic Urchin
APRIL  2010

Way back in February (I can't believe it's June already!!) I was taken on an incredible drive up to the Blue Mountains and I'm only now posting my notes about it.  Still, I can't gush enough about the renewing effect of that fresh clean air high above the heat and smog of Kingston, with breathtaking views of nearly untouched land.   It was quite  heavenly, and I absolutely aim to do this again when I return to Jamaica.

It's simply a place of modest communities (Irish Town, Hardware Gap, Greenwich...) scattered with beautiful bed and breakfast cabins, private homes, and quaint cafes,  all hugged in a cozy blanket of fog and lush flora.

There were breathtaking views of tree fern covered valleys, bright green moss wrapped trees, and quite a bit of non-tropical botanical varieties to my surprise, with pine covered mountainsides, and flower gardens much like you would find in Oxford, England! And that said, there is quite a significant community of British expatriates living up there.

A week after my trip I stumbled upon a Kuya Magazine issue with an article about Greenwich, and a cover photo of the same house I captured here, beautifully shot on a sunny day by  Franz Marzouca. It was still on the shelves  when I left in May, so grab it if you can find it - the full photo spread is quite magnificent.

click for larger view
Here is a mini list of what I found (and aim to check out when I return):
FLORA

Tree ferns, pines, orchids, sunflowers, ginger lilies, bright green moss  (I think it was spanish moss - but don't quote me on on that...), and quite a bit more - the names of which escape me now.

BIRDS:

wood pecker, hummingbirds

CAFES/EATERIES:

Gap Cafe - where I ate coconut creamy rice and peas, with 3 pepper spiced yellow curry steamed fish, and a thick slice of homemade carrot cake.  and yes, the blue mountain coffee was stella!
Others I hear worth checking out are Cafe Blu, IMZ Cafe, and Mount Edge (thanks Steve!)

INDUSTRY

Catherine's Peak water, Jamaica Coffee Board (Blue Mountain Coffee), Craighton Coffee Estate (tours available), Strawberry Hill Hotel and Spa, and private rental homes and cabins are available - like the one pictured above.
