The Ongoing Attempt

From SeBiArt's Creative Life Journey
Berthan Macaulay QC,  November 12, 1929 - September 27, 2006

Today is the 1 year anniversary of my father’s death - and needless to say, this event in my life has inspired much growth - some greeted with open arms, much of it with resistance; all of it necessary. Below is the best encapsulation of the past year for me - and what life, work, and play now mean to me; it is what I think my Dad tried to teach me and I started really learning it the day he died.

From SeBiArt's Creative Life Journey

Keep Dreaming.
And believe in your dreams.
Focus your vision and carefully plot the path toward it.
Seek permission from no one; work only for your own approval (which keeps you busy enough!).
Make the sacrifices you have to, with minimal complaints; endure the inevitable suffering along the way.
Stand your ground in the absence of support; utilize the seemingly inconsequential breaks in the race.
Make time to rest - it is there that your dreams are renewed.
Regard your helpers as angels, offering support where you can, and the utmost respect and compassion for the fact that they are on the same journey for themselves.
In all this, the reward will be a life worth sharing, worth defending: at the most, a life fulfilled; at the least, perhaps a life of fleeting accolades and secular rewards. Either way - a legacy for others to emulate.

Current mood: apathetic

In your obvious and utter imperfection you remain completely perfect for me.
Like a degenerative drug, you kill me, cell by cell, while you boost me into nirvana.

I floated too high to be saved and now that I begin my slow descent into assured doom, you throw me a brick...

and what do I do? I reach out to catch it.

thanks...for the mind fuck...when I hit bottom I'll know then if it was worth it.

How SeBiArt was born

Current mood: contemplative

So the story is I'm a deeply introspective, imaginative, and analytical performing and visual artist from West Africa, Jamaica, & the UK (email me for a clearer explanation if you wish) who thinks in logical sequences, verbal arias, twisted & winding tales, vivid colors, & experimental shapes and images.

Every teenager is plagued with anxiety, but of course I believe I had just a little extra - just too much on my mind really. I spent much of my time writing poetry & prose, and painting dark imaginative compositions. Art was my area of study in High School. But I actually started my professional journey as a visual and performing artist when I was scooped up into modeling at 15. Not the deepest world from which art is born, no - but, what they say is true - it is indeed a stepping stone.

My years in modeling birthed my career in the performing arts. I was casted right off the runway and straight into a locally broadcast soap opera, Royal Palm Estate, for 2 years, before moving to the US. Before long, I had a full time schedule as a model and actor, working in print, commercials, music videos, strutting the runways throughout the Caribbean, and shooting episodes for Royal Palm. I began honing my skills as a make up artist during this time, learning tips from the artists around me - painting faces for print and the runway, including the Miss Jamaica World pageant, and later acting as Chief Resident Artist & Consultant for Espére make up company.

Upon moving to the States I continued modeling and began my university studies in Theater arts and Psychology - graduating Magna Cum Laude from Marymount Manhattan College. I took Photography as an elective one semester and unsuspectedly stumbled upon a new love. I continued to study it as a focused science and art form - going on to do mentored Independent Studies after graduation, mounting my first exhibit at the Bank Street Theater in Greenwich Village NYC. It comprised of portrait studies of independent women in the NYC arts scene, as part of the Living in Pieces project by the Titans Theater Company.

Since then I very sporadically practiced this art - devoting more of my time to being a freelance make up artist, acting with various theater companies, studying at Peridance Dance Studios, and performing with choreographers and Dance companies.* I currently dance with NBCM Dance Company, and DRPDance Company. About a year and a half ago, through a series of unpredictable circumstances - I picked up the camera again, developed an obsession and creative purpose, and thus SeBiArt™ was born. I don't think my cameras will be collecting dust again.
